Three easy numbers will save you a headache

You can now call three numbers while traveling to limit damages if your credit cards are stolen.  They are:

Equifax 1-800 525-6285
Experian (formerly TRW) 1-800-311-4769
Trans Union 1-800-680-7289

In addition, to prevent identity fraud, the Social Security Administration fraud line is 1-800-269-0271.  If your cards are stolen, do the following:

1. Cancel your credit cards immediately.  Keep the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy (preferably in the same place that you store copies of traveler’s checks) so the phone numbers are available and you know which cards to cancel.

2. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where the theft occurred.  This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and is a first step toward a potential investigation.

3. Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security Number.  This alerts any company that checks your credit that your information was
stolen.  They must then contact you by phone to authorize new credit. Often thieves will open new accounts in your name and accrue thousands of dollars of expenses with stolen information.
