For some people, winter is a time for hibernation, a settling in and resting before spring finds them outside full-throttle, planning gardens, climbing, hiking, mountain biking, and enjoying all of the other outdoor pleasures of living in Colorado.

For people of this mindset, a weekend escape from demanding jobs, stock market fluctuations, crowded ski lift lines and endless rows of tourists sunning themselves on resort beaches is just what the doctor ordered. 

And for true solitude in winter, nothing can beat heading to the desert before the summer visitors flock into the area in droves.I headed for my solitude in Moab, Utah, a place that had become my spiritual home, not for recreation, but to think about how to incorporate simplicity into my life. 

For too long I had wavered in my relationship with my husband; for too long I had toyed with another relationship which, at its worst was dramatic and emotionally crippling given its bizarre circumstances, and at its best, was going nowhere.  So I set a date with myself to think.
